Kamakura Day Trip – 10 Things to Do in Kamakura

673A4259

Within my weeklong vacation in Tokyo, I did a day trip to Kamakura which is about 1.5 hours away by local trains. It turned out to be an unforgettable highlight of the entire trip.

673A4198

I was warned by my Japanese acquaintance to avoid the weekend crowd, but as weather and fate intervened, I had no choice but to fix it on a Saturday. Thankfully, I went early and reached Kamakura around 8am – there were few people in sight at that hour.

1. Breakfast at Breeze Bird Café & Bakery

673A4132 673A4118 673A4123

Most of the itinerary was already planned, including my breakfast spot at Breeze Bird Café & Bakery (3 Chome-4-5 Yuigahama, Kamakura, Kanagawa 248-0014, Japan). The full review can be found in my previous blog post, but to summarise, I had arguably the best brunch experience in Japan (so far) here.

2. Bread and Pastries at Bread, Espresso &

673A4190 673A4178 673A4172

A 2-3 mins walk away was my second café stop of the day – Bread, Espresso, & (1 Chome-10-5 Yuigahama, Kamakura, Kanagawa 248-0014, Japan). This is a popular chain bakery with several branches all over Japan, with the branch in Kamakura being a relatively recent addition. The café took over an old liquor and daily necessities store and maintained some of the elements of its predecessor such as the tobacco sales corner and red mailbox at the storefront. I highly recommend their French Toast, which was fluffy and moist especially in the middle.

    3. Sightseeing at Yukinoshita

    673A4222

After 2 full solo breakfasts, I needed a long walk to aid digestion, so I took a 40mins walk, passing by the Yukinoshita area with ponds, shrines, museums, and a popular path with cherry blossoms. At late morning, lots of people, both tourists and locals alike, were already arriving via the main train station and pouring out into the streets.

    4. Sightseeing at Hokai-ji Temple

    673A4206

Pictured above was another scenic cherry blossom spot I passed, which is also the entrance to Hokai-ji Buddhist Temple.

    5. More Bread and Pastries at Okashi Nikaido

    673A4214

I then came to my third food stop of the day, Okashi Nikaido (27-10 Nikaidō, Kamakura, Kanagawa 248-0002, Japan). Serving homemade muffins, cookies, pound cakes and granola, this minimally designed, takeout bakery was a hidden gem. I got the seasonal Kumquat muffin and had it right outside while it was still warm. The muffin was fluffy and had chunks of kumquat within, with a good balance of sweet and citrus flavours. Honestly one of the best muffins I’ve had.

    6. Shopping and Eating at Komachi-dori Street

    673A4224

I made my way back to Komachi-dori Street, the main shopping area of Kamkura with a huge stretch of street food souvenir stores. Surprisingly, I found no queue for Kamakura Warabimochi (1 Chome-6-8 Yukinoshita, Kamakura, Kanagawa 248-0005, Japan), so I quickly took the chance to finally try the warabimochi cup. Despite being extremely stuffed at that point in time, I was still impressed by the soft and silky mochi. I had to agree that the warabi mochi was higher in quality than the average one out there.

    7. Taking the Enoden line train

    673A4203

Being a passenger on the decorated Enoden line trains is key to the entire experience in Kamakura – I got on board and went to Enoshima station, where I alighted and headed up to Enoshima Island. I also made a pit stop at Kamakurakokomae Station to have a look at the famous scene from Slam Dunk, but the throngs of tourists going against the traffic controller and disturbing the peace of the surrounding residential area really put me off and I left very soon.

    8. Sightseeing, Shopping and Eating at Enoshima Island

    673A4271 673A4282 673A4277

The views of the sea from Enoshima Island were breathtaking, and well worth the long walk and climb up. Not just that, but there were also activities suited for different people – be it shopping at souvenir stores, trying shirasu dishes (popular delicacy here), praying at the temple or simply admiring the flowers and cherry blossoms.

    9. Tea Break at Bills

    673A4298 673A4296 673A4293

In the later part of the day, I had a late lunch at Bills (Japan, 248-0026 Kanagawa, Kamakura, Shichirigahama, 1 Chome−1−1, Weekend House Alley, F), located along the coast of Shichirigahama Beach. With a direct view overlooking the beach from most seats, the restaurant was constantly packed and bookings are recommended.

Having already tried the signature ricotta hotcakes from the branch in Seoul, I went for a savoury dish instead – the Chilli Miso Salmon with Hot and Sour Aubergine which lived up to my standards.

    10. Sunset at Shichirigahama Beach

    673A4310 673A4305

I timed my meal such that I could catch the sunset just by the beach below the restaurant right after eating. Though the sky was not clear enough to get a view of Mount Fuji, I was contented to have caught a beautiful sunset before heading back to Tokyo. Minus the rowdy tourists (will not state their nationality), the Kamakura day trip was my kind of an idyllic and healing experience.

Breeze Bird Café & Bakery, Japan – Best Breakfast and Brunch Spot in Kamakura

      673A4136

For my day trip to Kamakura from Tokyo, I had planned to have breakfast at Breeze Bird Café & Bakery, neatly hidden behind the Wadazuka station along the Enoden line. While being a popular spot among the locals, it seemed to be less well known among tourists and so I wanted to take the chance to review it.

      673A4155

Being the first customer to arrive at their opening hour of 8am, no less, I went straight for the outdoor terrace seats. There were 3 wooden tables with beige white sofa seats overlooking a well-kept backyard/garden, and the best part was the overhead tarp for shade and shelter from the direct sun. Since it was spring, the weather was moderate and breezy especially in the morning, making the terrace the ideal spot for breakfast.

      673A4118 673A4125

In addition to a daily range of bread and pastries available at the counter, the breakfast menu has 2 morning sets to pick from. I had the Morning Set A (JPY2,250), which came with 2 plates. The bigger plate was a colourful Miura and Kamakura vegetable salad with homemade sausage, slices of raw fish, and a small soup on the side, while the smaller plate was akin to an eggs benedict, with poached egg and mushrooms topped on homemade bread.

I also ordered coffee, but unfortunately there were no non-dairy milk options here.

      673A4133

The morning set was amazing, in terms of both portion and quality, for its price point. Unlike American or Greek salads overly doused with fat-laden sauces, the salad tasted fresh, organic and delectable without much dressing. I was also surprised to find slices of quality raw fish, together with the juicy homemade sausage in the salad. For someone who avoids processed food including hot dogs, this was one of the healthiest yet good tasting sausage I had.

      673A4146

As for the egg dish, it was equally or even better. The bread used was fluffy and soaked up a good amount of the mushroom sauce such that it felt like a savoury brioche French toast. I can’t point out what exactly the sauce was made of, but it was many times better than the usual hollandaise sauce we get with an eggs benedict.

      673A4152

I was stuffed but could not bring myself to skip their seasonal spring-only dessert. This aesthetically pleasing Sakura-themed dessert was essentially milk ice cream wrapped in a chewy layer of mochi, topped with peach sauce and amaretto infused milk sauce. The mochi was very soft, while the ice cream was light enough for breakfast.

Thanks to the fresh, quality ingredients of the dishes, huge portions, a relaxed and lovely ambiance and homely service, this was my favourite breakfast/brunch café in this trip.

174 Bingo – New Rustic Bakery Cafe in Joo Chiat Serving Artisanal Bakes

      673A5645-2

News of 174bingo, a new bakery-café in Joo Chiat, popped up on my feed just before I went to Denmark and Sweden, and I decided to visit after coming back from my travels. As per my preference and habit, I targeted to reach at opening hour but I was minutes’ late and there were already several patrons in the café.

      673A5718 673A5733

The interior of a humble size is furnished with moody lighting and wooden furniture, featuring a communal table and benches in the middle. There are also small and low stools along the walls which may be slightly uncomfortable for some. Note that only the outdoor seating area is pet friendly.

      673A5667

Coffee here is made with beans roasted by Maxi Coffee Bar and served out of disposable cups, I had the Hot White ($5, +$1 for oat milk). Non-coffee drinkers can opt for Chocolate ($5.50) or their Iced Seasonal Shrub Soda ($7.50).

      673A5728

The humble selection of bakes is displayed behind a glass counter next to the register. Having just came back from Denmark and Sweden, my interest was piqued by 2 Scandinavian inspired pastries.

      673A5672

The first was the Cardamom Bun ($6), which originated from Sweden and which I had tried 6 different ones on my vacation. The one here was decent with an adequate amount of sugar and cardamom, but lacked the softness and fluffiness of the ones I had in Scandinavia.

      673A5639-2 673A5696

“Memory of Osterbrograde” ($9) was the other Scandinavian inspired bake – Osterbrograde is one of the main streets within the Osterbro district in Copenhagen. The laminated layers of the pastry, topped with a piping of very subtly sweet vanilla cream, were crispy and flaky. Upon cutting through them, I found that the core was filled with raspberry jam that was more tangy than sweet. This is a good choice for those who do not have a sweet tooth.

      673A5664

I had only stomach space left for 1 more item, which was the Iranian Pistachio Tart ($14) – arguably the most premium pastry served here. The base is made with Iranian pistachio praline and pistachio frangipane, while the top layer is made from vanilla and pistachio cream. This was on the sweeter side, though I loved the sweet nutty flavours of the praline which was reminiscent of baklava.

      673A5632

Other than the sweet pastries, a tempting range of savoury items were also available, namely the Garlic and Herb Knot ($6), Four Cheese (Brie, Mozzarela, Cheddar, Cream Cheese) with Honey and Ol’ Fashioned Chicken Pie ($10.5). I guess it will require a second trip to satiate my curiosity.

Love this new addition to the Joo Chiat enclave.

A Keen House, Bangkok – Instagram-worthy glass house cafe with aesthetic drinks and desserts

      673A1865

On my past trip to Bangkok, I was continuously impressed by the cafés’ interior and high standard of coffee. In particular, the Sukhumvit area has been booming with such cafes and is now as busy as it gets on weekends. My café of choice when I visited the area was A Keen House, just a few minutes’ walk away from Ekkamai BTS station. They have another outlet at EmSphere but I highly recommend this outlet at Sukhumvit 40 for the interior.

      673A1896

Originally a three-storey townhouse, it was then redesigned into a café while maintaining the old structure. Additionally, a new glass house, that was inserted on the side of the first floor became the main aesthetic feature and seating space of the café. The interior reminded me of a cross between Scandinavian minimal + Japanese wabi-sabi – an inspiration I would like to take for my future abode.

      673A1866

The menu offers a wide range of coffee, non-coffee, pastries and artisanal goods such as breads, biscotti and truffle aioli. Many items are also seasonal in nature.

      673A1872 673A1871

While the café is popular for their signature flavoured coffees with Instagram-worthy toppings such as the Burnt Caramel Latte, I opted for the boring Matcha Latte (THB160, SGD 5.9) as I just had coffee from the previous café stop. It was decent, though slightly grainy with a flavour profile on the sweeter side.

      673A1876 673A1874

Along with my drink, I had the seasonal Double Chocolate Cherry Brownie (THB320, SGD11.8) which came in a glass jar. Rather than a brownie, it felt more like a jar cake with several layers including a cacao almond crumble base. I loved exploring the different textures and layers. Despite it being a double chocolate cake, it was not cloyingly sweet and felt more like a blackforest cake thanks to the use of cherry.

      673A1891

In between sips and bites, I also explored the second floor which serves as an art gallery with exhibits. The third floor is reserved for workshops only.

      673A1890

It was an interesting concept and use of space for various purposes – something I wish that we could have in Singapore, despite being aware of the impracticalities from a financial standpoint.

nadoya no kaTte – Single Origin Coffee from Glitch Coffee in a Traditional Japanese House

      673A4386

Serving single origin coffee from Glitch Coffee Roasters out of a traditional Japanese house is Nadoya no Katte, located conveniently from Yoyogi-Uehara subway station.

      673A4379

The house was in fact a vacant 60-year-old house which was refurbished into the existing café. Entering the gate, I went up a short flight of stone steps which led me to the façade of a corner of the house.

      673A4365

From there, I was led by stepping gravel stones straight into a tranquil garden with a myriad of greenery – cherry blossom trees, plum trees, peach trees, hydrangeas, trees which bear autumn leaves. As the café is only opened 3 days a week from Friday to Sunday, I missed the previous weekend when the cherry blossoms were still blooming fully on the trees. The remaining blossoms had already fallen to the ground.

      673A4356

On one end of the garden is the coffee counter where at least 8-10 different beans were available to choose from. The beans’ lineup changes depending on the season, and are all light roasted as intended for patrons to enjoy the original taste of the beans. Though it is possible to opt for coffee with milk, it is recommended to drink it as black coffee.

      673A4357 673A4363

I had a hard time choosing the beans I wanted but thanks to the barista who was very friendly and helpful in explaining the different profiles of the beans in fluent English, I could make a more well-informed choice. She was also the first barista I met in Japan who made light conversation with me, which gave a personal touch to the overall experience.

      673A4397

The beans were split into 3 different categories, the Traditional (800-900JPY, SGD6.9-7.8), Innovation (800-1100JPY, SGD6.9-9.5) and Hard to Find (1200-2000JPY, SGD10.3-17.2). I had the Colombia Huila Monteblanco (1000JPY, SGD8.6) with tasting notes of vanilla, milk tea, white chocolate, fresh mango, mint and smooth. I enjoyed the natural sweetness and aroma of the coffee. Glitch coffee was no doubt more expensive than average but of high quality.

      673A4368

While there were proper seats and tables within the house (when there are no ongoing exhibitions), the other café goers and I all went for the outdoor garden benches, where one can feel at ease with nature under the sunlight in moderate temperatures.

      673A4359

This is the one coffee stand in Tokyo for filter coffee enthusiasts to put on their list. While there are other Glitch Coffee outlets in Tokyo, the environment here has a lovely touch of nature, allowing you to feel different moods across the seasons.

Ogawa Coffee Laboratory, Tokyo – Specialty Coffee and Breakfast from Kyoto

      673A3935

Hailing from Kyoto, the long-established coffee roaster expanded to Tokyo with its first flagship in Sakurashinmachi 4 years ago. Being one of the few cafes in Tokyo which open as early as 7am, I visited the café for an early morning breakfast and coffee fix.

      673A3939

I loved how the spacious café boasted a modern concrete industrial look with muted tones, with floor to ceiling windows permitting lots of exposure to natural light. The interior design also featured details such as old paving stones that were used in Kyoto’s tramways.

      673A3942

Before settling down, orders must first be placed at the counter.

      673A3941

From the morning menu (served 7 – 11am), I had the Charcoal Grilled Toast with Avocado and Lime (JPY1,600, SGD13.8). It came with a choice of Pain de Mie or Whole Grain bread for the toast – I would typically have whole grain as a healthier choice but with the excuse of being on vacation, I went for the pain de mie. After being charcoal grilled, it had a crisp outer layer while retaining its soft, fluffy inner layer. As simple as a dish it was (what some people will claim to be something they can easily whip out at home but never do so), the avocado toast was satisfying.

      673A3961-2

The toast set included a choice of drink, so I had a hot oat milk Latte made from the House Blend Kyoto. It was a well-balanced coffee with a smooth mouthfeel with tasting notes of dried fruit – a daily coffee that was very drinkable.

      673A3946

Their list of signature coffees (created by their baristas) was tempting, so I added on another drink – the Bright Sense (JPY1,100, SGD9.5). The barista served the single origin coffee in a fancy glass to my table, where she then delicately added the fluffy milk foam. The milk foam made a good balance with the passion fruit-like acidity characteristic of the Kenya Gatuyaini beans.

      673A3964-2

As a sweet treat, I had the Whole Grain Scone with Seasonal Confiture and Tonka Bean-Flavoured Buttercream (JPY1,400, SGD12.1) which was a relatively new item on the menu. Being whole grain in nature, the scone felt less doughy and buttery than the usual scone – in a good way.

      673A3948

With over 21 variety of coffee beans on hand and separate lunch and dinner menus with extensive food choices, I would love to pay another visit.

MitBord Seoul by Edition Denmark (밋보어 서울) – Top-notch Danish Brunch at Seoul Forest

      673A0958

After having a great experience at the Edition Denmark store in Seochon in my spring trip to Seoul, I decided to check out their other physical location in the hip Seongsu-dong in autumn, which offers a full-fledged food and drinks menu.

      673A0914

“Mitbord” translates to “my dining table”, and the Danish café was established to bring happiness and enjoyment through seasonal plant-based dishes served on the table.

      673A0913

With the Scandinavian-inspired interior highlights such as the herringbone wooden flooring, white and brown colour theme and effortless displays of small props, I could not help but imagine I was in Denmark (though I have not been there before). In the day, the café received plenty of natural sunlight which created a warm and cozy environment amidst the transition from fall to winter.

      673A0921-2 673A0916

I ordered 2 of their signatures. The first was the Danish Bread Plate (KRW13,000), comprising Danish Rye Bread 3pcs, Spring Honey Butter, Soft-boiled Free Range Egg, Comte Cheese, and Salt. This is in fact the most common type of breakfast dish served in cafes in Denmark, and I enjoyed how simple and clean tasting it was.

      673A0930

My other pick was the Sourdough Pancake with Fig (KRW14,000) served with Mascarpone, Maple Syrup and Berries. Unlike the usual buttermilk pancake which is light and fluffy, the sourdough pancake was more dense and substantial.

      673A0943

Since I already tried the tea (sourced from A.C Perch Tea, the oldest teashop in Europe) and I had the Latte (KRW6500) with Plant-based Milk (Sproud). The coffee (sourced from Coffee Collective in Denmark) was of high quality – a light roast with a smooth finish.

      673A0925

There were also a range of desserts and dishes that rotate with the seasons which I wished I had more stomach space for.

      673A0917

The café was strategically located near the Seoul Forest Park entrance, so I took a stroll around the park grounds after a satisfying Danish brunch experience.

Anonymous Coffee, Bangkok – Outstanding Coffee in an Industrial Geometrical Building

      673A1910

Anonymous Coffee was one of my best finds for coffee from my recent Bangkok trip. As it was not located near any BTS subway station, I hitched a Grab bike which conveniently brought me to this relatively quieter area where the café was situated.

      673A1925

I couldn’t help but mesmerize at the geometrical, industrial structure of the café as I crossed the outdoor yard, where a few patrons were enjoying their coffees peacefully despite the blazing heat. Adorned with camping chairs and hanging light bulbs, it also made for a good photo spot.

      673A1905<

I grabbed a seat indoors where I could catch the baristas in action and still bask in some natural light while taking advantage of the aircon. The café specializes in single origin roasts with beans imported from various regions.

      673A1909

I had the Flat White – single origin espresso with milk (THB140, SGD5.13), which tasted so much like a light roast that I was surprised when I found out it was a medium roast. The coffee had a creamy texture and was very easy to drink with no bitter or sour aftertaste. There were also some signature drinks on the menu which caught my eye, such as the Yuzu Garden (THB6.60) which seemed to be a yuzu and elderflower drink with single origin espresso, and Sally O’ Brien (THB150, SGD5.50), a single origin cold brew with house espresso syrup and fresh cream.

      673A1913

The only available pastry/dessert when I went was the Banana Bread (THB85, SGD3.12), so I had one together with my coffee. Thankfully, it was not as dry as I expected it to be.

      673A1920-2 673A1906-2

I had a great time as a solo patron – the baristas were friendly and amiable, the patrons seemed to be serious coffee drinkers, and the ambiance made me forget about the busyness of life for a moment.

Fico – Gorgeous Italian Restaurant along East Coast Park

      673A3184-2

On my birthday this year, I was blessed to be treated by my close friends to a lunch at Fico, one of the restaurants that has been very high on my list of places to try in Singapore.

      673A3236 673A3213-2

Admittedly, the obscure location along East Coast Park was one of the hardest to get to – with public transport, I took 3 buses and walked about 15mins thereafter. However, the sunny clear weather and views of the beach from the masseria-inspired beachfront restaurant made up for it.

      673A3237

My friend (thanks Emily!) made the reservation about 2 months in advance since this was a highly sought after venue and I chose the al fresco section for the vibes. Later I found out that the cheese wheel (for cacio e pepe) and dessert trolley could only be experienced if you dine indoors, so that was a real bummer for me.

      673A3209

Unanimously, we picked the San Marzano Tomatoes ($23) to be one of our favorites of the meal. It was a type of Focaccina offered in the menu – an 8” focaccia-based pizza made with 80% semola dough. The dough was light and airy and topped with creamy bufala mozzarella, tomatoes, basil and EVOO.

      673A3168

I could not skip burrata whenever I see it on a menu, so we got the Burrata Di Puglia ($22) served on a bed of escarole, pine nuts and olives.

      673A3161-2

Amongst the 4 fresh pastas we had – Denti Del Drago ($27), Tagliolini ($38), Linguine ($32), Cacio e Pepe ($26, min order of 2) – the Denti Del Drago was the most memorable. It came in an unexpected shade of green, and I later found out that the pasta was naturally coloured with spinach! It was served tossed with white ragu and a generous portion of ricotta cheese which I loved.

      673A3172

Thankfully, the staff allowed us to enter the indoors section and admire the mixing, tossing, and serving of Cacio e Pepe from the pecorino wheel. Would recommend it if you are a fan of cacio e pepe.

      673A3187 673A3208-2

There were few mains on the menu, from which we picked the Charcoal Grilled Octopus ($36) and Pork Loin ($43). My pick would be the Octopus which I felt was tender and more flavourful than its red meat counterpart.

      673A3218-2 673A3216

The desserts (choice of 2 for $15, for every third dessert +$7) also came in very small portions (I could probably have 2-3 entire items on my own), so I would propose to try every item if you go in a big group.

We had the Burrata Gelato, Souffle Tart, Cannoli and Zeppole (Italian donut).

      673A3225

The interesting pick was the Burrata Gelato which had an acquired taste as the gelato was savoury with a slight sweetness and tartness from the strawberry and tomato jam. It was a yes for me.

Meanwhile, the Souffle Tart would be the safest bet as what could go wrong with a 70% dark chocolate tart with sea salt right?

      673A3227

The Cannoli was also good, with a crisp and light shell balanced with the substantial ricotta and pistachio filling.

We were the last group to leave the restaurant at the end of lunch service and had the luxury to roam about for photos. Kudos to one of the staff who voluntarily helped us with many photos, even directing the backdrop and poses!

Even though I’ve heard mixed reviews, I honestly had a good experience with the ambiance, quality of food and service. However, beware that the price point was high for very small portions so I would save the experience for a special occasion. Make your reservation early.

Protokoll Roasters (프로토콜 상수) – Aesthetic 3-storey Café in Sangsu with Great Coffee

I first came to know about Protokoll Roasters while they were operating their first and only outlet in Yeonhui-dong. Since then, the brand’s success has expanded enough for them to open a showroom and an aesthetic 3-storey café in Sangsu.

When I visited the Sangsu outlet, the showroom was unfortunately closed as they were busy running a booth at Seoul’s Coffee Expo. This showroom served as a multifunctional space for baristas to explain about Protokoll and the coffee they serve, to conduct coffee tasting and brewing classes, and for other baristas to try out their equipment – all on a reservation basis.

Right behind the showroom is the full-fledged café serving just coffee and financiers. As I came in right at opening hour, I explored the 3 storeys freely while waiting to collect my order. I loved the part industrial, part classroom-like interior – the exposed ceiling, bare concrete floor, wooden drawers with metal handles, metal lamps, all seemed to be in harmony with one another. The chairs and tables were also arranged to mimic a classroom setting, with stationery and notepads placed on the tables.

On the menu for espresso coffee, there were 2 types of beans I chose from: the Super Normal Blend, which is the very first blend created by Protokoll, and Pureut (푸릇) which is a Single Origin.

I had a Small Latte (KRW6000) with the Super Normal blend. It had a good body but not too heavy for me, with tasting notes of dark chocolate with a subtle tartness.

Apart from espresso coffee, there were also a range of Filter Coffees from Ethiopia, Costa Rica and Columbia.

There were only financiers (supplied by a bakery called Elder Franc) served in 4 flavours on the pastries/dessert menu – the Butter Scotch Almonds, O Lemon Marmadlade, Earl Grey Chocochip, and Espresso Vanilla. I had the Espresso Vanilla Financier (KRW3800) which was just alright. It could be rather dry to have it without the coffee pairing.

I highly recommend coming early to grab the window seats which gives you more privacy. Coffee connoisseurs must try this café.
